The Beginnings of a Love Story, Boob Planting, Gore and a Wiggling Video...

HA! Yes this blog is full of it...

Firstly, to address this 'love' story. At first THERE WAS NO LOVE. Yes, there may have been love at first sight but, I mean, who wouldn't when you found out you were getting to ride this:

Ma_bikee

EXACTLY.

The love was lost in a 'it's not you it's me' situation as, at the second round of the British XC series down at Dalby Forest, it was definatly me at fault. My legs froze up in the very cold conditions (I have since found out I have inherited the bad circulation that stems from both sides of my family) thus resulting in the most appalling performances, possibly, of all time. HOWEVER, through the ridiculous battle I had forcing myself to push through the pain to make sure I finished the race and I did it! It was dreadful but I did it. I am a very hard nut to crack and, if it wasn't for this hard nut quality, then I wouldn't have finished the race and this wouldn't have happened:

Me_at_dalby

EPIC - would be the most appropriate word. Thanks to Bob Bogdan Williams / Shred for taking this AWESOME shot, nice one dude! Click on his name and check out his website there are some great pictures there!

After this bad start to our relationship my Kinesis Carbon Maxlight 810 and I came together again and ended up here:

Jumps

Now, I LOVE jumps! I can't do any sweet tricks on them - I can just clear the things. XC bikes are definitely not the first choice for jumps so I wasn't expecting much... Then, after one loop, everything changed - Dalby was forgotten and love was in the air because by gosh this baby can JUMP!!! I am not sure exactly why the bike felt quite so amazing, maybe it's the amazing combination of the stiff carbon wheels, the gorgeous carbon frame and the lovely FSA carbon bars, seat post and stem that make this carbon machine a jumping hero. Whatever it is, it is an incredible little bike!

Boob planting
Sorry guys, unfortunately I haven't discovered a way for you to grow your own boob plant... By boob planting I meant this:

Dsc_0585

Like face planting but not with your face...However that wasn't what had my face tripping, the really sore part was this (not for the faint hearted, look away now and scroll down a bit if you don't like blood etc):

Gore

And I wonder why I don't have a boyfriend....
So, the story is: whilst I was doing hill efforts earlier in the week I was pretty off my face whilst descending due to the high effort for the hill and lost concentration for a second and BAM. I was on the floor. It hurt. A LOT! The bruise is the impressive part but it won't show up in a picture because it's not quite colourful enough yet!

Love Story part 2
After Dalby I was back on it last weekend for round two of the SXC series. On Saturday pre-race my wee bike and I had an awesome day filming with Calum Darling for my own wee Tweedlove Story!! The bike and I felt on fire so we tried riding the same crazy descent that I did on my full sus Pivot in the enduro I did a while back (the one that I winged it the whole weekend, only just surviving) keep you eyes out for the video to see how I get on doing ON MY CARBON HARDTAIL!

Screenshot

I am so excited for Tweedlove!! Last year was a great success and this year is looking to be even bigger and better!! I have just entered myself into the: 'POC king and Queen of the hill' race which is in the format of an enduro race but with the King/Queen of the hill title up for grabs! So me and (possibly) the Pivot are going to go all out to try and claim the 'Queen of the Hill' title. Check out the sweet Video of dirt school boys Ruaridh Cunningham and Chris Ball ripping up some of the tracks that will be in the course: HERE. WATCH IT!!

After the awesome filming day I was excited to race my little bike again! I managed to get third at SXC round 2. The race was a massive improvement on Dalby but still not where I want to be. So what I am going to do?? Nail the next block of savage training and come back and KICK ASS! Yeaaah!

Dsc_0544

Me on the Podium with American, Erica Zaveta taking the win for Moda - Bike magic and 2nd was the invisible Elke Prasad racing for Squadra Porcini. Well done to all who raced!

Just want to say a massive thanks to Windwave for sorting out all my FSA carbon bits, Dom and Kinesis for designing such and awesome wee carbon race machine and to Paddy at UpGrade bikes for getting everything together and getting the bike to me! Love the bike guys, thank you!! Also Thanks to my Dad and second Dad Ian Grant for their awesome taxi service and top notch race support as always!

WIGGLE WIGGLE WIGGLE YEAH!!
What the hell is she on about?! I hear you think... Just to spice up ya life I thought I'd finish this blog off in a slightly different way - after the SXC race Lucy, Calum (JB) and I went to an awesome well know out door shop and tried out their scooters check it out:

Time to get back to my kick ass training,

Win Tin Ton
p.s. Check out this pic from filming yesterday with Calum Darling for the IXS race that's coming to Inners! Pete Williams, Erin Maguire and I had a lot of fun riding around until Pete broke his collar bone... he's only just back after a broken leg!!! Heal up soon buddy!

Mother Nature on full attack and some short stories from the TSBS

So last week had quite a bit of this:

Dsc_0462

(Ha! Good one Mother Nature... NOT.)

Some of this:

Dsc_0445

(that's more like it!)

Oh, and this:

Dsc_0475

(oooh, TSBS! Don't know what that stands for? All will be revealed...)

So at the beginning of the week it was 10 minute efforts (basically intervals, but we call them efforts). Now, you have to get psyched when going to efforts because you know it is going to be pain-fest, so, when I looked out side to see this:

Dsc_0460

it's fair to say it makes going out a bit harder... then when the snow came, yeah it was quite uninspiring! However, Lesley Ingram made a good point on twitter and quoted this from Graeme Obree: "living in Scotland only makes you tougher - no such thing as bad weather only poor choice of clothing." So, with that, I carefully evaluated my clothing choice and faced the weather! Soaked through but efforts all done mother nature was not breaking me today! Though, she tried again two days later when I was doing more efforts by hitting replay on the weather - I think I earned some serious tough points last week!

Next up it was time to head to Glasgow for this:

Scottish_bike_show_2012_logo

(TSBS - The Scottish Bike Show, get it now? Good.)

Wooohooo! So luckily I drove over to Glasgow in the depth of the night which secured my survival! This night time driving tac-tic came in incredible handy when all of a sudden the 3 lane motorway turned in to 5!!! Due to the lack of cars I had time to do the whole, panic, recover then GET OUT THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD without causing a crash!

Anyway, after arriving in one piece, it was set to be a fun couple of days at the Show. There were some crazy dudes doing big stunts on their BMX's, test tracks to try out bikes, loads of great stands and lots and lots of bike chat going down!! I was there for a day and a half with Ian Manning and Matt Killick from Upgrade Bikes living it up at the Upgrade Bikes Stand:

Dsc_0474

(hmm, looking down on the stand? Impossible for a midget? Not on Saturday! I grew an extra 2ft - I was having a good day)

At our stand we were joined by Simon Nash who is behind Green Oil Bicycle Maintenance:

Dsc_0479

(Guess which one is Simon?? Ha, none of them! Wheeeey)

Short Story no. 1: Going Green.
Once upon a time there was a guy called Simon and, after riding his bike through a river Simon became aware that all the toxic ingredients in the chain lube be polluting that river. He then thought of the streams and the earth that he was inevitably polluting too. So, Simon wanted that to change and decided to make an alternative non-toxic, completely environmentally friendly option (THAT WORKS) and now has a full range of bike lubricants, bike wash and more! What's cool is all the bottles are made from recycled plastic AND the caps are reused from coke/Pepsi/sprite etc bottle caps - good idea huh?! Check out the full range here: green-oil.net
The end.

Also with us was Andrew Lang who designed this genius solution to bike storage:

Dsc_0477

Eh, and how is that a solution!? I here you ask well this is how it works:

Dsc_0481

See, told you: Genius!

Short Story no. 2: The Cycloc Solution.
Once upon a time there was a guy called Andrew who was a product designer, originally from Scotland, who'd ventured daaan saff to live in London. Andrew used his bike to get around the busy streets of Laandan town but, became sick of the bike cluttering up his flat. After many days of searching far and wide; investigating every bike storage solution out there one thing always held him back: his lack of shed. This lack of shed meant most storage options were useless. Then, there was a light bulb moment and Andrew, the Product Designer, decided to do something about it. He bought a shed. No no no no, I'm joking he didn't!! He actually decided to create and solution so fellow bike riding flat livers/non-shed owners could store their bikes away tidily. 10 years later with a solid design, a growing range and healthy awards cabinet the brilliant Cycloc 'store your bike with style' is now solving storage issues all around the country! Hurrah!
The end.
p.s. It comes in many colours:

Dsc_0473

Intregued? Find out more here: www.cycloc.com Both Green Oil and Cycloc are distributed by UpGrade bikes

Also under UpGrade was Flying Fox bike shop who sell these beauties:

Dsc_0480

Big love for Pivot's after I had some awesome fun on my Pivot for a midget - a Pivot mach 5.7 in XS, perfect!

So, my job was telling everyone about the sexy Lezyne tools that Up Grade distribute and that I am lucky enough to use and race with:

Dsc_0472

Oooh multitools! I was so excited when I realised Lezyne sponsored the team through UpGrade as I've always admired their smart engineering as they just think of everything - it's all very clever - plus all of it just shouts quality at you! It's a win win situation!

Dsc_0471

Ohh is that a big wheeled bike in the back ground there?! ^^ Yup, and here it is:

Inline images 3

Yes, that green bike is one of the very first Kinesis FF29 29er and it graced The Scottish Bike Show! Really excited to get a shot on one of these! A midget with big wheels will be very interesting! Here's hoping it brings with it a whole new realm of speed - Dom, I have no doubt in your designing skillage, this bike is going to be insane!! WOO!

And finally, after a smooth drive home I went for a road ride on a glorious evening:

Dsc_0487

Haha! Glorious?! I never use that word...
On Sunday the great weather continued and I headed up Innerleithen red route, this was the reward at the top of the hill:

Dsc_0492

Riding around Inners was amazing! Every time I do I am reminded why I ride my bike - it was just SO much fun! The trails were riding awesome, as was my wee Kinesis and, at the end of the day, having fun is what it's all about! :)

Big shout to Up Grade for having me a long at the weekend, Free Flow Bikes for letting me razz around on their bikes, Hannah Barnes who signed her poster for me (yup, she's made it big time with her own poster!) and to Scottish Bike Show for a great couple of days I met so many great people, if you didn't get a long this year make sure you're there next year!!

Next up: This weekend is Round 2 of the British XC series at Dalby forest! Lets see what I can pull out the bag!

Here's to many more fun bike rides!

Over and out,

A weekend of missions: driving, betting games and winning.

Mission #1: Use new legal driving ability to get you and Lucy Grant (SAFELY) to round one of the Scottish XC series at Kirroughtree forest.

Sheldon

Mission accepted.

Driving into Peebles to pick up Lucy my co-driver for the weekend I was uncontrollable with excitement - it was ROAD TRIP time!! My dad managed to sort out insurance of Sheldon our Suzuki Swift at the beginning of the week and I was absolutely LOVING this new found freedom and independence. We live five miles up a dead end valley so now, finally, I CAN ESCAPE THE VALLEY!!

Co-driver now in place and we were off!! However, my ears were still bleeding from my Granny having a hissy fit when I told her that I was going to be driving down to the race on my own (I didn't dare mention that Lucy would be accompanying me) and had been severely warned that I was NOT to over take ANYTHING! 50mins into the drive and the wee swift had already over taken a camper van and a slow moving silver car. Sorry Granny... It was quite safe and Lucy wasn't scared!!

Mission #1 status: complete.
I am pleased to say after managing to negotiate some huge roundabouts and some big hills (Sheldon doesn't like hills) we arrived in Kirroughtree in one piece much to, well, everyones relief! People assume I drive like I ride a bike - I do not though as that would be very scary and dangerous!!

With mission #1 safely under our belts Lucy and I joined Paul Newnham (my coach from Scottish Cycling) in a coaching session for Hervelo girls to help with coaching some skills and race craft. It was a great to pass on some of the knowledge I have of bike riding and racing to help these lady's get into it! I have to say, I was very impressed by all of them - all super keen, ready to learn and good positions on the bike! It was an awesome start to the weekend! Well done girls!

Mission #2: Learn how to play 21 and win.
Unfortunately for these guys I don't have an off switch for my competitiveness...

Dsc_0426_-_version_2

(left to right: JB, Lucy and Iain.)

I take no prisoners. So, even though were were only betting for these:

Dsc_0433

(no idea how I was allowed near them, it's quite clearly stated they should be kept away from children)

I still wanted to end up with the most matches and, luckily for me, luck was actually on my side! I think it may have been beginners luck but I wasn't complaining. Not long in and JB was out and my pile of wood was getting bigger:

Dsc_0428

Above is my big pile and Lucy's last few matches before I did a dirty bet putting her out the game and it was down to just me and Iain:

Dsc_0429

Mawhahaha!! After a fight with Iain and luck still on my side I took the win and went to bed quite smug!

Dsc_0427

However, when I woke up I was far from smug as the rest of the night turned out to be rather eventful one:

Dsc_0435

Yes, my tent was frosted on the outside when I woke up. Yes, it had been ABSOLUTELY freezing all night. And yes, I did have to get up at 2.25am to get the grubby bike blanket out of the car to attempt to warm my freezing bones! It hadn't worked but thankfully I still managed to get some sleep!

Mission #3: Win my first elite race.
After a bowl of porridge and a quick warm up the sun was shining down on us as we stood on the start line. This course was the perfect mix of man made and natural single track with technical climbs and a little drop of fire road - if everything else failed at least this course was awesome fun to ride!!

After a bad start I still managed to get poll position in to the first single track climb and controlled the pace all the way up the hill. After the techy I had a gap with Lucy Grant and Isla Short as we broke away from the rest of the women. On to the fire road and the two young guns over took me and, at this point, it was apparent that the max threshold and then Vo2 max test I had done two days ago had sucked all the zip out of my legs...

Max_test

^That's me getting ready for the Vo2 max test looking delightful!

Luckily for me in this race we were only doing three laps!! I no choice but to let the girls go as my legs were unable to respond to the attack.
Heading into the final lap I was starting to struggle. COME ON LEGS!! Hang in there guys! Sickness was back but I continued to push on, I knew that 2nd place, Verity Appleyardwas starting to catch me up!! I got a fright as I headed down the final descent and she was only a couple of metres behind me! This was racing!! I had held on this long and I wasn't going to let her take it from me and sprinted all the way to the line and managed to hold it! Mission #3 complete!!

Podiumsxc

WOO!! First win as an elite! I was pleased I won but really not pleased with my performance, I wanted to race not survive! However, you live and learn and I'm glad I learnt that at an SXC rather than a national round!!

Well done to Verity on second and Morven Brown who had an awesome race! Read about it here. Also big well done to JB on his first SXC win in Juvinile boys (LEGEND) and Lucy who also took the win in her category! We all travelled home happy campers :)

Thanks to Iain for feeding me and letting me take Lucy in my car! And to Hazel who made our delicious tea!! Now it is time for a 3 week training block before Round two of the British XC round at Dalby forest! Can't wait!

Hope you don't have too much snow... It's a bit minging up here! Keep riding folks!!

CH-CH-CH-Chaaanges

Oh yes, the first British XC round at Sherwood Forest brought plenty of changes... It was a new year, a new race and a completely new category as I'd be racing elite for the very first time. I stood on the start line with only one expectation and that was to: expect the unexpected. When the gun went the red mist came down. I was time to make my mark as an Elite racer.

Sunday morning:

5.30 (well so we thought…) Lucy says to me: "KATY! Why aren't you up??

"Eh… cus it's half five and the clocks have changed so I don't need to eat till 6.30." I groaned.

"uh right…"

6.30 (or so we thought…) ring…ring…ring… Alarm goes off and we are all up getting porridge ready. BOOM, bang on time! On it like a car bonnet we weren't getting caught out this year nuh-uh (or so we thought…)

7.15 (or so we - yeah, you get the drift..) Knock, knock on the dad's door, Iain (Lucy's Dad) answers "aww no, have we slept in??"

"yes!!! Lets go!!!" we replied. So Lucy and I get the van keys and head to the van. Yay, we'd eaten, we were packed and all set to be leaving on time :)

"Girls, girls" Iain say's as he comes out into the car park. "your an hour early… It's 6.30 now"

Yes folks, Lucy and I had been awake from 3.30 (old time) and up since 4.30. Since the Dad's were up in plenty of time we went to this place:

Dsc_0398

yeah… really didn't think I'd find myself here never mind find myself here at 7am (real time). (Don't worry coach Paul, I DID NOT EAT ANYTHING!!)

So, after and eventful morning we arrived on race sight in plenty of time. The sun was creeping over the tops of the trees and it was looking like we were in for a gorgeous day! A quick change of kit before the Kinesis Maxlight Pro3 and it's smexy Reynolds wheels and I headed out to do a bit of a lap:

Dsc_0395

Oh no wait... that's not my bike! BUT, these ARE pretty cool!! This is my bike:

Dsc_0390

This was before we headed down to Robin Hood land - HOW CLEAN IS THAT!? Looking mega!! :)

Sherwood is one of the flatter non-scary courses that is included in the British rounds. This year was no different and was a standard Sherwood-esque course with short sharp fire road transitions between bumpy, twisty turn single track with the random one (blue) stand alone root here and there. Oh yeah and the occasional log just to spice things up…

Standing in the sun on the start line, after a good warm up, I was looking forward to racing my own race. So many things had changed for this race which meant, for me, it finally became: 'just a bike race'. When you have the British Champs jersey on, when you've done well in the past, when that expectation hangs over your head like a heavy cumulonimbus there is so much more going on in your head. Today, as always, I knew what I had to do but this time there was no pressure from anyone and not even from myself. I am only 18 years old and racing with the best women in British XC (one of which is top 10 in the world) a long with some other foreign riders. I was a puppy in with the big dogs.

Image

I had no idea where I was going to end up, in fact no one did, there was no messing - it was time to to race my little heart out, learn from the experience and show everyone what I got.

I had a good start and was still feeling good in 8th with 2 laps to and Gabby Day chasing me down. Going into the first bit of single track she was right on my wheel so I kept squeezing on the pedals keeping the pace just that wee bit too hard for her to sprint past. Through the trees I got a bit of a gap but she was back on me on the straighter single track. Into the slightly sloping downwards piece of track (wouldn't quite qualify it as a descent) I pushed on trying to keep my speed through all the fast corners and got a gap. The next flat straight bit she was back on me. Not panicking I kept her behind me and controlled the pace. Getting another gap through the first part of single track then quite a significant gap as I took all the A lines (faster harder routes) while Gabby took the B lines (longer easier routes) I knew I had to up the pace if I wanted to stay away. Coming into the start finish with one lap to go I still had a good gap. I knew if I could do exactly the same for the next lap there was no chance she would catch me; I just had to live up to my nickname and be on it like a 'car bonnet'.

Over the final random log that allowed you a sneaky looked back up the track she was no where to be seen! However, it's not over until you cross the finish line so I sprinted on finding every last piece of energy to leave it on the track. Through the final twisty turny trees and I was home bound and crossed the line in 8th!!! I was delighted but so tired!

Dsc_0402

I was so broken! Living up to the name of my nice Movelo Kickback hoody and Kicking back!

I was so pleased to FINALLY get a good start to the season! I felt consistently strong so long may that feeling continue!

Big thanks to Papa Winton and second dad Iain Grant for driving us down and feeding and always sorting us out! My BBB helmet and glasses got their first race test and they pass, 10 out of 10!! I never ever race with glasses but these were awesome! check out a pic, plus there is another Kinesis frame too! Pic here.

Well done to everyone who raced, even the dad's who did the open race on the Saturday!! You did GID!

Dsc_0397

I have more good news: I PASSED MY DRIVING TEST!! And I now have insurance on (Sheldon) our old wee Suzuki Swift! So, this weekend is the first round of the Scottish XC Series and I am going to drive there!! ROAD TRIP! Excited!!

Also, I haven't done a post on this so, if you haven't seen it already, this is the funny video from SPANISHLAND!! :D gives you an idea of the awesome riding out there and that, eh yeah, we are right weirdo's!!

I'm off for a night ride now in this LOVELY weather! Hope you've been getting out in it!!

Tarra for now!

So you think it's easy?

Something I learned at the weekend: downhill is NOT an easy discipline! Nope, if it was easy I would have woken up on Monday morning feeling fresh and ready to face the world. Instead I've spent most of this week feeling like this:

Image

It's not been a good week...!

Monday morning especially, I could feel my whole body groaning as I woke up begging me to stay in bed and rest my rattled bones. The weekend had been far from easy...

The last round of the Alpine Bikes Winter Series at Inners was a Downhill race and, since my return from hard training in Spain, I couldn't wait for some riding fun on my Pivot! I was not disappointed as Steve Deas of Icycles put together a, too be expected, fricken awesome track!! It was completely mental but it was awesome!! The top section was REALLY steep, rough and loose with random drops; I found this section really hard to ride on the wee Pivot but it still managed to get me down, just! Then it was into a fast pedaly middle section down some muddy rooty bits and to the finish. I knew this track was going to test the Pivot to the max and also my ability to stay on the track holding on to the bike for dear life!

Unfortunately, things did not start well... I wouldn't recommend turning up to a practise/race/ride etc. WITH NO SHOES. We've all been there and had that feeling where all your insides sink in disappointment only to rise straight back up again boiling with frustration at your stupidity. However, it was time to suck it up and vow NEVER to make that mistake again. So, I waited for my Dad who later arrived for a coaching session with my shoes - thanks Dad! And, at 2pm, I was on the bike opting for pedalling up the hill checking out the track as I rode past. I made it to the top and was greeted by a red flag (this means course is closed as someone has had a really bad crash) so I just did the top steep section a couple of times. Red flag down and two runs later that was practise over.... To say I was feeling unprepared was quite an understatement. What was worse is that I knew fine well that this was not a course you could get away with 'winging it' - especially if you wanted to do well and as ever, I did.

The next day Bex and I arrived in the car park to this..

Dsc_0339

Mother Nature was on form and had sent us some snow which was coating the tops of the hills.

However, I REMEMBERED my shoes this time so Sunday was already looking better. I managed a good first run before the snow started to melt... This melting changed the whole feel of the course - a particular change that, on the second run, saw me more on the floor than on the bike due to the mud party that was happening the whole way down the hill... I was not feeling ready for racing at all!

Heading up for race run no. 1 I was fretting because I hadn't had enough time swap my tyres to some that would grip. Surprisingly though once off on my run I managed to somehow get down the first section clean!! Maybe I could get away with winging it... This was a stupid thought. Crossing the line at the bottom with a broken visor I was not a happy chappy as I'd just spent more time on the ground than on my bike during that run. The thing is, it wasn't even fun! It was a disaster, which was sad because I love flying down hills ON my bike but, in that run, I was just flying off my bike.

Race run no. 2, heading up the hill this time with mega grippy tyres thanks to Dad and a fixed visor thanks to Nick at the Alpine Bikes stand! Reaching the top I was ready to give this run all I had to see if I could at least make it onto the podium. About 20seconds into the run I full on head butted a tree. It hurt a lot. But, I had a job to do so I jumped on my bike which turned out not so successful as I slid down the hill flying off my bike and into the midst of tape. Quickly jumping up I grabbed my bike and ran to the fire road. Not exactly the way I was hoping this run to go... Fortunately though, something clicked and the rest of the run my tyres gripped and I started to ride properly and felt like myself again!! YAY. All it took was a jolly good smack over the head and things started to come together. By the bottom I was happy, that was actually fun!! My time took me into third behind Bex in second (getting revenge after our last race together, one all now!!) and Angela Coats in 1st!

Here is a link to a sweet picture by Ian Linton of me in the lovely KMP downhill jersey on roots and rain, check it out here. This was before my broken visor!!

Just want to say a massive thanks to Innerleithen MTB racing and Alpine bikes for putting on another great series and to all the marshals who braved the weather and stood in the FREEZING cold all weekend! I salute you! Thanks to everyone who looked after me and helped me be a bit more of a 'down hiller' and less of and XC'er! And to my Dad for all his help at the weekend!

Now I look ahead to the first XC race of the season where I'll be visiting Robin Hood at Sherwood Forest on the 25th of March! Training time!!

Thanks for reading, remember your shoes!!

Catch up time - BBB-Big surprises, food for hero's and a new look!

Now, before I went to Spain I was on a training camp and, before that training camp some exciting things happened!! One of them being Bex's face when she saw this:

Dsc_0297

Bex's first words: "IT'S PINK!!!" yes Bex, yes it is! More pics to come...

Another thing was two big boxes of goodies that have arrived over the past two weeks one of them being this BBB-big surprise:

Dsc_0308-2

Unfortunatly the oranges were not included ;)

This is all my awesome gloves over shoes and socks:

Dsc_0312

Thanks so much to Windwave/BBB for sponsoring the team this year! I have been stuggeling away with my current over shoes that just don't work to the point that my toes got chilblains over the winter. NOT GOOD! So when these new overshoes arrived my feet were especially happy to know that morphing into ice blocks during rides is to be no more! Hurrah for over shoes that work!!

When I went to Spanishland I took my new helmet with me and also my new glasses (Thankfully the winter kit wasn't needed):

Dsc_0310

Sweet huh!?

Now, one thing about these glasses and my face is that, as with most of me, my nose is tiny and the brand of glasses I was using before ALWAYS slid down my nose. However, BBB have clearly thought about noses and have whapped an adjustable nose piece on to the glasses! Brilliant! So now I have a pair of glasses that can successfully do their job with out causing issues by falling down my nose! It's been a revelation! Thank you Windwave and BBB!!

Next to arrive was this:

Dsc_0332

CLIF BAR!! YAS! This is the food of hero's I tell you! It is so yummy!!!

I was gutted to find out that they missed the flight to come with me to Spain arriving at my house just hours after I left! :( I genuinly LOVE clif bars, my Dad's friend Steve always brings some over for us from the US and I always look forward to it but now I don't have to wait anymore! I've also got some of their Shot Blocs and Gels to see if I can find some good fuel that doesn't make me sick during races. So fingers crossed that clif have the winning formula!

And finally, the new look! Thanks to Oli at Morvelo who sorted me and Bex out with some SWEET downhill tops!! Here we are modeling them:

In this top I all of a sudden become so ripped with massive arms and shoulders for tearing up the trails!

Aren't we just delightful models!? Next we'll be on the cover of Vogue... NOT.
These awesome tops are going to be on show for all to see this weekend when the P4M (Pivot for a Midget - my XS Pivot Mach 5.7, it's teeny) is going to be put to the test in the last round of the Winter Series Downhill race at Innerleithen that Bex and I are racing! Excitement dosen't even come close to how I am feeling right now!!!! After a prolonged period on the XC bike I've been treating myself to some fun riding time on the P4M down some awesome trails the past two days. I tell you, I'm in love with that wee P4M bike!!

Keep Riding and thanks for reading! Off to get ready for the weekend,

SPAINISHLAND - Rocky Balboa, Beetroot and 5 broken people

To be honest the week didn't start off well - when we arrived all our expectations of this 'warm weather' training camp were crushed with a mallet as we landed in a cold, wet Spain. Our transport into the mountains wasn't quite what we expected either - a rickety old van that smelt rather strongly of cat piss with a dude that spoke no English... the mallet hit again that night when we found ourselves all huddled up on the sofa wrapped in blankets counting down the days until we could go home because it was SO cold. Where the hell was the real Spain?? Luckily, things got better...

Tom 'Ivan Drago' Evans, Iain 'CNP' Paton, Stuart 'Scott Boy' Wilcox and Ben 'No gloves' Miller were the Scottish Juniors boys that were joining me - Dangerous Katy and Scottish Coach Paul 'Rocky Balboa wannabe' Newnham on the Rocky Balbowa Training Camp (you know the rocky films? Yeah? Well, Paul was trying to giving us a film education this camp...).

First here are some pictures - my wee bike getting ready to fly out Spain:

LOOK!!!! Mountains:

Dsc_0320

So, after our first freezing night in 'Spain' things had changed (thankfully) by morning time:

Dsc_0326

THE SUN CAME OUT! Perfect timing for our 4hour road ride! The 1.5hr climb to start off broke us in nicely to the first days training on the Rocky Balboa Camp. The veiws were lovely and we got to ride with bare arms and legs (been a long time since that had happened) which meant that the tan lines were already starting to make an appearance. Once back we cleaned out the fire which made for a pleasant evening - no blankets required - watching Rocky 1. Boom!

Day two and it was time to hit the trails. Oh yeah, after a 40min hill climb effort! A total of 2.5hrs of climbing we made it to the top before we got to go off road! This is the view from the top:

0dsc_0329

Yes, yes that is snow, and it was real snow I saw a snowman on the way up and everything!

It was now time to descend, we'd earned our fun after the savage hill climb effort so we could really enjoy the rest of the day! We had a long way to come down! These trails were, AMAZING! So rocky and fast every time we regrouped at the road transitions we were all buzzing! I'd ridden these tracks a couple of years previous when out with my family and struggled to get down but my wee Kinesis Pro3 and I are quite a team now! It was great to ride the bike on different terrain too - it was pretty extreme for the wee Kinesis but it took it all in it's stride keeping the riding super fun as always!

We dropped down to a little village called Capileira to have a sandwich! Check the wee Kinesis, smexy wee bike don't you think? Check those wheels, so nice:

Dsc_0333-2

Eh, yeah, it does say 'Katy Winto' on my bike... it's my foreign name for when I'm in foreign land ;)

We then descended further down through Capileira, Bubión and Pampaneira with a short stint on the road before more and more descending! It was amazing!! From here we descended down then climbed up and over that ridge - you can see the path in the middle, and Órgiva, where we were staying, is just behind that wee hill.

Dsc_0337

This is on the ridge and, apparently, Steve Peat rode down this! It looked pretty much like riding down a wall! Nutter...

Dsc_0339

After this, on the final track of the day, I had a near death moment - I'd let my brakes off to go passed Ian who had fallen off. From that moment on, unable to brake, I had no control of the rapidly increasing speed I was picking up due to the marble like ground underneath my wheels. I had two options: Jump off, and probably break a bone landing in all the rocks at this speed - yeah, that quickly changed to 'not and option! So I was left with: just hold on. And hold on I did... screaming down the hill I SOMEHOW managed to hold it making it (an alternative route right enough but I made it all the same) to the fire road. In one piece. Paul, however, was NOT happy that I'd just taken 5 years off his life as he pooed his pants because it looked like I was about to end myself... So that was and eventful end to the day and so I was named 'Dangerous Katy'.

The rest of the week, consisted of an easy ride (quite difficult when you have to climb everywhere), a split day including 4x4min steep hill efforts (I was a broken woman this day) 4hours on the road, another mountain bike ride and a whole lot of salad eating! Paul forced salad upon us and BEETROOT which none of us liked. We all moaned about it but knew that actually it was doing us good; it just tasted dreadful.

On the final road ride we cycled to the highest village called Trevélez, it was freezing! The descent on the road however, was amazing! It just went on and on and on, corner after corner as it weaved us down the mountain with not a car insight! It was a great ride!!

The final day we climbed up on the opposite side of the valley for our final ride of the week. This was the view from the top:

Dsc_0315

You can see Órgiva where we stayed it's the big populated bit at the bottom then over at the very top right hand side is Pampaneira up to Bubión then Capileira at the top!

And here is a picture of me at the top with my wee bike,

Dsc_0318

Oh look it says Katy Winton on this side, just to confuse you... Also modelling my nice new BBB helmet and Glasses on! :)

The saying from Paul to me at the top was "Now, Katy, If in doubt, miss it out. Okay? no more near death moments please" my reply.. "nah nah Paul, If in doubt, ride it out" ooh, if looks could kill I would have died! Luckily this was a great descent with billions of switch backs I had a wee tumble at one point but nothing major and everyone got back safe and sound from our last ride of the week!

After our expectations being crushed at the start of the week, it was all made up for because we never saw a drop of rain the rest of the trip, the roads were better than we could have imagined and the trails were just something else!! We all want to say a massive thank you to Scottish Cycling for helping with some funding for the trip, Paul for putting up with us and force feeding us salad and Dave, our guide, for showing us the trails and keeping things exciting! Shout to Steve, Howel and Andrew who all came out on the off road rides with us too!

I'd also like to say thank you to Windwave for sorting me out with my sweet BBB kit! I'll pop up another blog this week with all the pictures, there is more!! And to the boys for excellent banter and keeping positive when we were all so very broken!

We have lots of video's from the week so I am editing them all together into a wee video which will hopefully be up sooooon!

For now, it's back to reality, I've got a nice week of light training to recover from the overload and a bit of fun this weekend before the next 3 week build for the first race of the season: Sherwood Pines British Round 1 on the 25th of March!! Exciting times!

Keep riding folks, and thanks for reading :)

Innerleithen Enduro: Just gotta wing it...

...believe me, after sprinting (well, trying to) through a ridiculously sloggy boggy mudfest, getting overly friendly with a tree and JUST managing to hold on to the handle bars to make it to the bottom of this CRAZY descent being able to wing it comes in very handy!

The Innerleithen 'XC' enduro. What. A. Weekend!! Though, I must say, I think they need to change the name to 'Xtreme' Enduro rather than XC... It was MENTAL! This 'XC' enduro consisted of 3 stages of timed sections of descents, each of which were separated by climbs back to the top to start the following stage (these were not timed thus being the beauty of enduro racing - chilled climbing).

After Saturday practice I was buzzing! Newly aquanted with an XS Pivot Mach 5.7 the vedict was: AMAZING!! If you've not seen it already check out the wee video I put together of it's first ride:

I've ridden similar crazy descents on my hardtail and had fun but, your on the limit the whole way down and it feels like at any given moment you may die! The extra travel and perfect tiny size of the Pivot eliminated this feeling and I was left hurtling down the hill knowing that the only reason I wasn't going faster was because of me and not the limitations of the bike. I was no longer on the verge of death... this, was going to make for a VERY exciting weekend!!

Sunday came and we headed up the hill. After a great nights sleep I was feeling ready to hit the descents full pelt. My dibber dibbed and I was off on stage one. This trail was natural, steep in places and slippy. It was, by far, my favourite of them all! On my hardtail I would have been on the edge of survival, loving it but on edge! Instead I was experiencing the solid ride of the pivot as we flew down the hill! By the bottom I was hungry for stage two, this was SO much fun!!

Stage two required mental preparation. Mainly for the bog. That energy sapping, strength killing, bike sinking bog. Oh my, it was hard!! I made a couple of mistakes before I hit the middle section and by then I was pooped! This high intensity, seat down sprinting business was really hard work! Then Iain Paton, who was on an XC hardtrail nipped past me making things look so easy! Where was my hardtail?? Once on to the steep section I was NOT longing for my hardtail and was LOVING the pivot as it took me flying down the hill over taking Iain again then into a tree... brilliant! Scrambling back up to grab my bike I found a suitable place to mount my bike without rolling down the hill again. However my back break was pointing to the ground which meant no slowing down for the rest of the stage. Jeez oh, winging it to the max! I was buzzing by the end of that stage to: 1. still be alive and 2. be having such a ridiculous amount of fun!!

Before stage three we foze our butts off waiting for poor Stuart who's chain had got completely stuck in his chain gard... We then had to face the HUGE climb back up to the top. The Pivot excelled in stage 3: it took ever dip, bump, jump and corner in it's stride and I was absolutely loving it!! Even though by this point my arms, legs, and whole body were pretty tired I managed to hold on!Seeing stars at the top of the sneaky climb in the middle of this stage I carfully descended until my brain and body reengaged and pushed on until my dibber was dibbed for the finally time.

By the bottom I was dead but so happy! Usually after a race I am happy if I win and not so happy if I don't. But, at this point I had no idea how I'd done and, to be fair, wasn't too fussed! I had had such an insane amount of fun that over ruled everything :D
It was an amazing weekend of riding!!! Chilling on the climbs then smashing it as fast as you could down the hills! That's just a dream format of racing, I loved it!

Here is the bit of paper I got given at the bottom with my times:

Dsc_0258

That time saw me win the women's race! That was the icing on the cake to a fantastic weekend! Big shout to everyone who raced here is a link to a great wee round up on Descent World click here and a nice wee picture of me on the Pivot! Also massive thanks to Innerleithen mtb racing, alpine bikes and all the marshals for a great event!!

Now, back to training! Keep riding people,

This week was no ordinary week… It required PICTURES!

It also involved A LOT of hours on the road and the mountain bike! However, I was joined by some quite astonishingly good weather for January in Scotland!

Take a look, this was Monday's ride... there is even a shooting start in the left hand corner:

Dsc_0236

HA, made you look! That's a plane, silly :P

The next two rides weren't that exciting, but this was:

Dsc_0241

Yum, apple crumble made by me! Watch out Mary Berry (for you folks that don't know it's the woman off Great British bake off) ;)

It was then time to burn that all off and head out again on the road. It was a beautiful day and I just couldn't help myself the views on this ride were AAA-mazing:

Dsc_0245

On my way to st. Mary's loch…

Said loch:
Dsc_0252

It was then up the hill to Talla (a well know VERY steep hill in the area) here is the view from the top:

Dsc_0255

Luckily I had my sensible head on and didn't go tearing down the steep side because, well, look:

Dsc_0258

Could have been the end of me! Once at the bottom the sun was shining and the water was SO still it was like glass! I couldn't resist another photo:

Dsc_0261

Look!! There is a hill in the water! :O

Next was a mountain bike ride up Glentress. Now, after all this ridiculous wind (AKA hurricane bawbag) we've been having it was a shock when I quickly snapped these photo's that 1. There was no wind AT ALL and 2. It was actually silent. No sound at all, no birds no people, no traffic, no nothing! I was slightly eerie:

Dsc_0269

This was on the black climb, time to keep climbing...

Dsc_0267

It was then down to the top of spooky, SUN SHINE!!

Dsc_0273

(so many people take photo's of this view but it is so lovely!)

And finally today, manage to survive another long road ride!

Homeward bound...

Dsc_0277

... to the Valley in which I live:

Dsc_0280

Ah so nice but SO COLD today!

So that was it! It has been a hard week of training but I couldn't ask to do it in a better place - road rides with beautiful scenery and an awesome selection of mountain bike trails with equal beauty right on my door step… So lucky! :)
Keep riding people!
